Ed Hogben is a London-based trumpeter exploring uncharted territory with his instrument. Using a MIDI harmoniser, he’s able to play chords in real time – essentially fulfilling the role of piano or guitar in a jazz trio. A recent graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Hogben has adapted the harmoniser as a live improvising tool in ways that haven’t been done before. His approach has resonated widely online, with performances capturing attention across the jazz community and beyond. Drawing on influences from Miles Davis and Tom Harrell, Hogben is opening up fresh possibilities for what a trumpet can be in jazz.
