Michael Overduin leads a structural biology lab focussed on how proteins recognize lipid signals in biological membranes. He has been a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta since 2015, and is a Visiting Senior Scientist at the Université Paris-Saclay supported by the Jean D'Alembert Program 2023-2025. He founded the SMALP Network, an open innovation community for developing native nanodisc technology, and DiscoveryLab, a network that connects entrepreneurial researchers with investors and business advisors. He was Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Birmingham and Director of the Henry Wellcome Building for NMR Spectroscopy from 2003-2015. Michael established his first lab at the University of Colorado in Denver in 1995, postdoc’ed at the University of Toronto from 1993-1995 and obtained his PhD at The Rockefeller University in 1993.
