About Cowra Youth Council

The Cowra Youth Council (CYC) is a committee established by Cowra Council in 2011. The Youth Council is made up of two Councillors (currently Cr Judi Smith and Cr Ian Whitty), the Community Projects Officer (Linda Barron), and 17 young people that live or attend school in Cowra. Youth Councillors participate in the planning and running of youth orientated events in the Cowra Shire which includes but is not limited to; National Youth Week, the Festival of International Understanding, Cowra Breakout Anniversary Commemorations, NAIDOC Day Celebrations and our annual youth forum for World Peace Day. We provide youth events such as cinema screenings, outdoor events such as our ‘Colour Me Happy’ Run, Park Fun Days, and the Festival Duck Race. We also fundraise regularly for various committees and important causes but also our adorable Shetland pony ‘Topsy’ who is a part of the Cowra Riding for the Disabled Association. We aim to provide a platform for young people to share their opinions and voices on issues that matter. We are regularly in contact with local members of parliament, Cowra Shire Councillors and other Cowra community groups to give comments and suggestions for youth orientated policies and programs. We also send representatives to select local and state youth events per year. Youth Councilors are required to attend monthly meetings held at Cowra Youth Council on the second Mondays of every month, with exceptions included.
