“I was a bluegrass musician (guitar, vocals) and an early member of this group before leaving for overseas in September, 2002, just a month or so after its formation. On this night, the boys played with two handicaps - the bass player was caught up in Brisbane's lockdown and the mandolin player travelled down from Nelson, simply not available for the weekly practices. Losing the bassist lost also the 4-part a cappella gospel songs. Barrie the mandolinist, sometimes changed to accordion but emphasised his bass buttons to thicken the sound. Russell George provided the continuity, describing the night as a 'band practice' to explain away all the unrehearsed mistakes. At the back, where I was seated, the audience enjoyed the jokes and the material which often veered away from standard bluegrass repertoire into popular songs such as Ann Murray's 'Songbird'. The encore was deserved. Tony Hale”
