Follow Canterbury Medieval CombatAbout UsCanterbury Medieval Combat was born from a desire to explore and preserve the authentic martial traditions of medieval Europe. At the time of our founding, East Kent offered no local groups dedicated to HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). Drawing from our founder’s background in traditional Japanese martial arts, we began as a study group—seeking to understand and replicate the techniques of the past. How We EvolvedThrough extensive research, participation in workshops, and immersion in original fight manuals, we selected the German fencing tradition as our focal point. Joining the KDF as a recognised Fechtschule (fight school) has allowed us to learn from top-tier coaches across the UK and Europe. This affiliation also gives us privileged access to manuscripts and weapon handling sessions at the Royal Armouries.Recently, having secured more accessible hall space in Canterbury, our group has re-established regular training sessions—reviving the spirit of our early days. Our Approach to PracticeOur purpose is to faithfully interpret techniques as they were intended to be executed—focused on real medieval combat and self-defense, not theatrical display. We align closely with early manuscripts, particularly those aimed at practical fighting for the medieval middle classes. While our core discipline centres on the German longsword, our curriculum also includes:DaggerGerman Long Knife (Messer)StaffPolearms (such as halberd and poleaxe)Sword and BucklerTraining Locations & InclusivityWe run regular combat classes across Kent, with our main training venue located in Canterbury. Additionally, we offer instruction at various events throughout the region. Our mixed-weapon classes and seminars provide opportunities to explore a wide array of weapon systems—including German longsword, Messerfechten (knife fighting), and Dolchfechten (dagger fighting)—all within a supportive and structured learning environment. Why Choose UsWe are the only club of our kind in East Kent, offering authentic training in German medieval combat traditions. Our instruction is manuscript-based, emphasising the practical and historically accurate application of techniques. We foster a community where fitness, technique, strategy, and historical appreciation all intersect.Beginners are fully welcomed—our open-door policy means anyone can join, learn, and grow within the system.Get InvolvedWhether you seek to learn, improve, or teach, Canterbury Medieval Combat invites you to train in a supportive environment where history comes alive—blade by blade.
