About Brundibár Arts Festival

Brundibár Arts Festival is an annual festival dedicated to the music and arts of the Holocaust. Every year, the Festival plays an integral part in Newcastle City Council Holocaust Memorial Day Programme, creating events across Newcastle and Gateshead; to include concerts, exhibitions, theatre, cinema and an extensive education outreach programme. The Festival takes place in venues ranging from local hidden gems to international concert halls and offers a performance platform to young artists, local talents as well as internationally acclaimed soloists. The Festival is named after Hans Krása's opera "Brundibár" (meaning bumblebee) written in 1938 and performed 55 times by the children of Theresienstadt concentration camp. Our Festival is named after the Opera as a lasting  tribute the children of Theresienstadt. The Festival brings people together to appriciate music and drama and aims to enhance their understanding and enjoyment of the arts within the context of remembering the victims of the Holocaust in positive and aspirational ways. It also provides a platform upon which to give exposure to relatively unknown, yet wonderful music which was either written during the Holocaust or has a connection to it.
