Follow Bennett/Cousins MusicThe event was well attended and the church was full. A lovely atmosphere was generated by the Ukrainian girl singers supported by two Folk Duos. Audience participation was welcomed in places and the audience responded with rhythmic clapping and chorus singing. Refreshments before the event and at the interval added to the warmth and friendliness of the occasion. The event was synchronised to the date Anne Brontë visited Scarborough - only to die, tragically, three days later - she is buried only a few yards west of the church. Her sister Charlotte, on hearing of Anne’s death, was asked how she would arrange for Anne’s body to be returned to the family home in Haworth. Her reply was ‘let the flower lie where it fell’ (i.e. Scarborough) and so it came to pass. The theme ‘let the flower lie where it fell’ featured in one of the most touching folk songs of the evening. All in all a very creditable contribution to Scarborough’s Festival.
