About Autism NS: Cumberland

This is a registered non-profit organization created by parents and run by a voluntary board of directors. This organization was created to promote awareness, provide resources and be a support for families affected by autism. WHAT IS AUTISM... Autism is the most common neurological disorder affecting children and one of the most common developmental disabilities affecting Canadians in general. ASDs change the way the brain processes information and can affect all aspects of a person's development. Classic autism usually appears during the first three years of life. Autism is four times more common in boys than girls. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurological disorder resulting in developmental disability. This affects: Communication Social understanding Behaviour, activities & interests Each individual is unique - no one person with ASD responds or behaves exactly like another with the same diagnosis. 1 out of every 91 Children are Diagnosed with Autism. OUR MISSION... To promote Autism Awareness, Advocate equality for our Children, and linking Families together for support. Working together to assist and empower Families affected with ASD. OUR VISION... That people living with Autism Spectrum Disorders have the chance to achieve their full potential, have the opportunity to grow alongside their peers, and that they and their families have access to the resources they so direly need! OUR RESOURCES...
