WE THREE, by local author Kerry Ames, is an imaginative retelling of a story most audiences are already familiar with: the visit of the Magi. This story has been recited, analyzed, acted, filmed, put to music, or otherwise examined and embellished for over two millennia. All of these treatments had a core element, an implicit understanding that the visitors from the East knew the identity of the child they were searching for.
WE THREE imagines the travellers had no such prior knowledge. How could they? Yes, the star did beckon. These foreigners were intrigued, but embarked on their mission not knowing who or what they would find. They speculate, and standing between them and their goal are soldiers of Imperial Rome, an unbalanced and fearsome King Herod, and an unsettled Jerusalem. Through many tribulations, they arrive at an unimpressive Bethlehem. This, they ask, is where the star's beckoning light concludes? Here? A shack amidst a village of peasants?
Be with the travelers on their quest, as they meet tragedy in the desert, dine with a suspicious King Herod, encounter a poor family in a humble village, and yet, do not leave disappointed. It's not what you're expecting.
