Introduction to Rifles - Oquossoc

Learn the basics of safe firearms handling and build your skills with this hands-on workshop focused on hunting with rifles. If you’re interested in hunting deer, moose, bear, squirrel, hare, or just getting started with firearms, this class will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to take the next steps.

The workshop opens with firearms safety and range safety instruction. There will be opportunity to ask any questions throughout the workshop. For those 12 and up, participants will then receive supervised time at the range.

What You’ll Learn:

• Safe firearm handling in the home and in the field, including field carry positions
• Different types of rifles and actions and how they work
• Differences between calibers and bullets
• Selecting ammunition for different game species
• Shooting stance and technique
• How to sight in a rifle
• Brief overview of hunting laws and regulations
• Rifle maintenance and storage.

This is great for the new hunter or target shooter, and a great refresher for experienced folks to get ready for the season.

This course is taught by certified instructors in a supportive, safety-first environment.

What to Bring:

Please dress comfortably to be both inside and outside, and pack water.

We will be working with .22 rimfire rifles. All rifles, ammunition, and materials are provided by Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, including eye and ear protection required at the range. Please do NOT bring any firearms or ammunition.
