Capitalism and Equality
In this talk, Dr. Jessica Flanigan, Professor at the University of Richmond, argues that capitalism benefits disadvantaged workers more than economic systems that purport to be more egalitarian. She develops three arguments for this claim. First, free markets benefit disadvantaged groups that also lack economic power within existing institutions, such as non-citizens and future generations. Second, egalitarian redistributive systems empower public officials, thereby widening existing inequalities of political power. And third, policies that limit people’s economic freedom often backfire by disempowering the most disadvantaged workers. Flanigan concludes that egalitarians should embrace markets.
