Join us on Saturday, January 31st for a two hour willow basket workshop! Participants will make a 7'' x 7'' x 7'' (approximately) willow spiral hanging basket using willow rods they'll harvest on site. First we will venture out into the willow patch to gather our materials, then we will use a template to craft a conical shaped hanging spiral willow basket. These baskets are good for holding things such as garlic, small fruits, a glass jar lantern, or dried flower arrangements. We will discuss some basics of willow basketry while acknowledging the accessibility of the craft, the materials, the history of the land we are gathered upon, and the current cultural environment we practice this craft within. Capacity: 12 people
Experience Level: All levels are welcome. No experience required. Average to moderate hand strength is needed for this class. It will likely not be a good fit for anyone with hand sensitivities including hand injuries or arthritis.
Inclement Weather Plan: If the weather is inclement on the day of the scheduled workshop, we will reschedule for Sunday, February 1st at the same time.
About the Instructor: The instructor is committed to fostering an equitable approach to craft. Her teaching will thoughtfully explore how craft practices, education, and materials are connected to broader social issues such as historical and ongoing injustices, including land appropriation, indigenous displacement, and systemic inequality. She will also share ways she is actively engaging in efforts towards repair and positive change within the field. You can learn more about Frea (FREE yuh) at WildEarthCrafts.com.
