Weighing the Heart : From Socrates' Death to the the Egyptian Scales of Maat

In both ancient Greece and Egypt, the moral worth of a life was measured by the harmony between ones actions and a higher order of justice. In this 40 minute lecture followed by an open Q&A, Dr. George J Aulisio explores the parallel visions of virtue and order expressed in the Trial and Death of Socrates and the Egyptian Book of The Dead - specifically the "Weighing of the Heart" ceremony, where the heart, bearer of the soul's record, is balanced against the feather of Maat, goddess of truth and order.

Moving from Socrates' final act of moral courage to the Egyptian ideal of cosmic balance, the talk examines how both traditions envisioned the good life as harmony between reason and spirit, self and cosmos, life and what lies beyond.
