An Evening of 21st Century Music
Sunday, October 12th at 6:00pm CST
The Large Recital Hall at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music
Admission: Donation to The OKC Homeless Alliance/Regional Food Bank
Hey friends,
I would like to invite you to the very first recital in a new concert series I’m putting together called An Evening of 21st Century Music. This event is dedicated to my former percussion professor, Charlotte Mabrey, who passed away just a few weeks ago.
Char had a concert series at the University of North Florida called An Evening of 20th Century Music that ran for nearly 30 years. I had no idea back then how much those concerts would shape me as a performer, educator, and person. It’s been almost 20 years since I experienced one of her recitals, but the impact still resonates.
Losing Char is devastating. I’m still processing it, and I know many of us who knew her are struggling to imagine a world without her. She gave us so much—her time, her wisdom, her humor, and most of all, her deep respect for people and the power music holds in connecting us all together.
Charlotte Mabrey saved my life. I hear her in my teaching, my playing, and in the way I try to show up for others. This recital is for her.
In true Char fashion, the evening will include:
• Solo pieces
• Chamber music with my students and friends
• A few musically uncomfortable moments (you’ve been warned!)
• And hopefully, some funny jokes. We shall see.
This recital is also about giving back. I’m partnering with the Oklahoma City Homeless Alliance and the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to collect donations for those in need.
This concert is free, but if you’re able, please consider bringing:
• Non-perishable food
• Warm clothing
• Hygiene items
I will have more information on what they are looking for in the next few days. Keep an eye out on my socials and in the discussion pages for more information.
Donation boxes will be available:
• Outside my office the week leading up to the recital
• At the event itself
• There will be an online form from the Homeless Alliance where you can donate directly.
Link will be posted on my socials and in the discussion pages of this event.
I’d love for you to join me, my students, and my friends for a night of music, memories, and community. What more do you need? "I’ll see you later.” 😉
