The elimination of fear is the beginning of attention. Fear must exist as long as there is an urge to be or to become, which is the pursuit of success, with all its frustrations and tortuous contradictions. You can teach concentration, but attention cannot be taught just as you cannot possibly teach freedom from fear; but we can begin to discover the causes that produce fear, and in understanding these causes there is the elimination of fear. Attention arises spontaneously when around the student there is an atmosphere of well-being, when he has the feeling of being secure, of being at ease, and is aware of the disinterested action that comes with love. What is the cost of fear in our lives? How does it interfere with self-understanding, loving relationships, and our full presence in the world? How is fear related to image making, to our perceived need for self-control, to the “shoulds” we impose upon life? Krishnamurti suggests it is possible to stay with our fear until we understand its cause at the deepest level, and that doing so will eliminate it. He had apparently done so. Is it possible for us? How can we find out?
Please join us in creating a safe place, an atmosphere of well-being, where we can examine our fears and fear itself. We will meet each day for a 2½ hour session that will include a discussion of the dialogue process, dialogue, video clips, and excerpts from texts.

Facilitators Terry O’Connor and Kathy Franklin are retired psychotherapists who found Krishnamurti’s teachings invaluable in their work. They have been facilitating dialogue since 1992 and hosted the annual Memorial Day Krishnamurti Dialogue and Gathering in Maryland for 25 years. In 1989, Terry published an article in the Psychotherapy Networker entitled “Therapy for a Dying Planet”, and he continues to believe that the single most important way to address the crisis humanity faces today is to understand the consciousness that created it. In addition to being a way to deepen our self-understanding and inquire deeply into the subjects Krishnamurti discussed, a dialogue is a microcosm of the human community, an opportunity to see ourselves in the mirror of relationship, to become aware of that which creates our sense of separation, and to discover a communion beyond thought.
