Ten Islands Historic Park Outing

Ten Islands Historical Park is maintained by the Alabama Power Company and is located near Henry Neely Dam in Ragland, AL. The park offers many opportunities for bird watching from several locations including 5 short, well-maintained trails. Numerous song birds, raptors, and waterfowl have been observed in the area. The park is also rich in historical significance from its first prehistoric inhabitants to such notable figures as Hernando Desoto, Andrew Jackson, Davy Crocket, and Sam Houston who traversed the area at different points in time. The area is also thought to be near the site of Ft. Strother which played a major role in the Creek Indian Wars and was home of a little known Civil War skirmish. Our plans include walking a 2-mile, wooded trail with the option of adding an additional mile on an adjoining trail. We will be watching for different bird species so it is advisable to bring along binoculars. Participants should meet at the park at 9:00 am for this outing.
