-CATCHER CLINIC: Three Skills & Drills:
RECEIVING.
A catcher uses three Stances in each game. Each stance is different, and has a specific purpose based on a game situation.
You will learn:
- How to give SIGNALS to the pitcher (and nobody else!)
- When/ how to set-up and catch the pitch in the RELAXED stance, with no runners on or less than two strikes.
- How and when to be READY to block, catch and throw out runner
BLOCKING.
The most important skill from the Ready Stance is BLOCKING the pitch in the dirt.
The purpose is NOT to catch the ball, but to stop and control it. Then quickly get to your feet and retrieve the ball.
You will learn:
- how to quickly get to your knees, controlling the ball in the dirt
- how to spring-up from knees (gorilla push)
- scoop/ rake the ball using glove and hand
THROWING.
The most visible and measured catcher skill is THROWING to bases (first, second, third).
Catchers are graded on their PopTime to second base. Yet, the ball velocity is only half the challenge.
You will learn:
- how to enhance your mechanics- footwork and arm slot
- how to transfer the ball from glove to hand
- to focus on your release, velocity and accuracy
- the differences in the throw to third base
