For the August 22nd book club, we have chosen The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes:
Growing up is never simple, but for Yamilet Flores, the pressure is turned up to eleven. Newly transferred to a predominantly white, ultra-traditional Catholic school, Yamilet is determined to do what she’s always done: blend in, get good grades, and - above all - keep her secrets safe. At home, her mom is fiercely loving but devout, and at school, Yami is one of the only Latinx students and definitely the only one who’s secretly queer. After being outed at her old public school, Yami’s top priority is survival: don’t let anyone know she’s gay, and don’t let her little brother Bo slip up and tell.
But secrets are slippery, especially when the school’s only openly queer girl, Bo’s new best friend, keeps challenging Yami to be honest - about her crushes, her culture, her faith, and what it means to truly belong. As Yami navigates the minefield of well-meaning priests, sassy classmates, and her own tangled heart, she’s on a riotous journey to trust that she can be both Mexican and queer, loyal and honest, a good daughter and her authentic self.
Filled with sharp wit, moving confessions, and laugh-out-loud one-liners, The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School is a beloved, big-hearted coming-of-age story about building chosen family, discovering unexpected courage, and learning - sometimes the holiest thing you can do is be exactly who you are. If you’ve ever felt caught between worlds or longed for a guidebook to self-love, Yami’s journey will resonate and inspire.
Join us for a celebration of queer coming-of-age as we explore Yami’s journey to love, identity, and courage!
And don’t forget - you can always stop by the store to grab your copy of The Lesbiana's Guide To Catholic School.
