About the event

Make The Most Of Your Space: A Garden Workshop
We love to create opportunities for people to get more connected with their food, and what a better way than to learn how to grow some yourself?

Growing your own food sounds intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! We are partnering with a couple of knowledgeable and engaging local experts to bring you two 30-minute demonstration style workshops about how to grow food at home - from your kitchen countertop to any type outdoor area available to you.

Jamila of Shindig Home & Garden will dive deep into the benefits of microgreens and the joys of growing your own. With an overview of growing them at home, from setting up your space and getting started to care tips and harvesting techniques. She will cover the basics of growing, frequently asked questions and common issues associated with growing microgreens, followed by some time for questions. There will also be microgreen kits available for purchase (details to come) and additional resources for care.

Manny from Fig Leaf Gardens will cover how to get the most out of a small container garden, whether that’s a raised bed in your backyard, a few pots on your porch, or a shared bed in a community garden. We’ll explore smart techniques for maximizing space, including soil health and companion planting, so you can grow a thriving, productive garden no matter how much room you have.

We’ll round off the afternoon with a garden fresh lunch from the Fig Leaf Gardens team featuring Shindig Microgreens. Please make sure you bring a notepad to take notes and dress to be outside all day. We suggest layers for going between sunny spaces and shaded spaces.

Here’s a little more about our teachers:

Shindig Microgreens: Like most people Jamila’s life took a turn during the pandemic, but a new chapter began. An opportunity to blend her passions for design, gardening, and community, she started growing and sharing living microgreens, unlike anyone else in the Bay Area. Shindig Home & Garden reflects the belief that even in challenging times, we can choose to cultivate joy, growth, and community. We thank Jamilia for bringing her knowledge of growing microgreens at home to this workshop.

Fig Leaf Gardens: Fueled by a love for food, gardening, and sustainable land care, the team at Fig Leaf Gardens have created a space for the community to come relax and feel connected to the earth. Head gardener Manny has years of experience making urban farming both fun and accessible for everyone. We are thrilled to have his expertise guide the container gardening portion of the workshop. Garden chef Britten lives to share her passion for bringing food and people together in a beautiful space. We are so excited to be sharing a delicious garden fresh meal prepared by her at the end of our workshop session.
