About this in-person workshop
Get hands-on practice and in-person support on your project budget. Bring your laptop (we'll have a couple of loaners if you don't own a computer) to work on your budget in small groups with other filmmakers and support from practiced producers!
This workshop is part of BAVC Media's VERSED summer workshop series, presented in partnership with the Berkeley Film Foundation, to support filmmakers working on applications for grants, sponsorship, or artist support opportunities.
This session will take place in person at Oakstop (1721 Broadway) in Oakland, led by Dawn Valadez, with support from Julia Robertson (Filmmaker) and Isabella Miller (Berkeley Film Foundation).
About the instructor
Dawn D. Valadez is the Director of Youth & Artist Development at BAVC Media. She is responsible for the youth programs in San Francisco and the East Bay including Reel Stories. Dawn co-directs national artistic programming such as the BAVC Media Maker Fellowship. Dawn Valadez is a second-generation Xicana, fiercely independent, queer filmmaker and artist. Along with her Co-Director Rodrigo Reyes their film Untitled Lorena (in production) won the 2024 DocLands Jury Prize for their recorded pitch. Dawn is the Producer/Co-director of The Pushouts (with Katie Galloway, 2018), earning the 2019 Imagen Best Documentary award.

The BFF grant program accepts applicants who live or work in the cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, El Cerrito, Albany, Richmond, and Oakland.
