About the event

The Bronze Age Frescoes from Santorini: the art of Atlantis?
The lecture indulges in a sumptuously illustrated look at some outstanding ancient Greek artworks, and the intriguing possibilities of interpretation that they have produced. In around 1625 BCE the thriving harbour town of Akrotiri on the island of Santorini was overwhelmed in a cataclysmic volcanic eruption that both destroyed and preserved the one of the most wondrous sets of frescoes to emerge from the ancient world. Now beautifully restored, they give us some extraordinary insights into the techniques of their incredibly gifted artists, as well as remarkable insights into the environment of the islanders of Bronze Age Santorini.
Steve Kershaw has had a special interest in the world of the Ancient Greeks and Romans ever since being introduced to Homer’s Iliad by an inspirational teacher at his primary school. He has a degree in Classics and a Ph.D from Bristol University. He teaches Oxford’s on-line course on Greek Mythology, is a guest speaker on the Classics for several cruise lines. Steve also lectures regularly at the V & A.
Media appearances include appearing in a Channel 5 TV documentary fronted by Dan Snow about destroyed ancient cities; and guesting on BBC Radio 4's You're Dead to Me hosted by Greg Jenner. He has authored and edited volumes in the field of Classical mythology. He also happens to be an internationally renowned jazz double bass player.
