St Mary’s new Director of Music conducts his debut concert with the Orchestra of the Restoration. Opening with Mendelssohn’s famous and brooding concert overture, the orchestra will then showcase top prize winners from the last Nottingham Young Musician of the Year competition as soloists. Instrumental winner, Kylia, can be heard in Tournier’s colourful and enchanting Fairyland for harp and strings, and brass finalist Joshua is the soloist in Strauss’s heroic first horn concerto.
We also celebrate the remarkable music of Louise Farrenc, performing her brilliant third symphony to mark the 150th anniversary of her death in 1875. This symphony has been described by Tom Service as being “as impressively energetic and structurally satisfying as any of Mendelssohn’s or Schumann’s”, full of wonderful music that communicates her “uniquely expressive and significant voice that needs to be recognised and heard.”
