In this workshop, Peter Moore Fuller (Bard in the Independent Crossword) will introduce you to the wonderful world of cryptic crosswords where playful puns, arched anagrams and inspired imagination come together in a poetry of puzzling.
We'll cover:
Brief history of crosswords and the introduction of cryptics
Famous crossword setters
Different types of crossword (in UK and internationally)
What sort of knowledge do you need to solve cryptic crosswords?
How does a cryptic crossword clue work? The basics of definition and wordplay and the poetry of surface
Clue types - from anagrams to spoonerisms!
Mini-puzzle solves to practice different clue types
Next steps - where to find supportive online communities and good quality crosswords for beginners
About Peter
Peter Moore Fuller has lived in Norwich since 1997, when he arrived to study a BA in English and American Literature. He was heavily involved in the UEA Creative Writing and Drama Societies and acted at the Maddermarket Theare including several roles in Shakespeare plays.
Peter is a five-time winner of the Guardian Crossword Blog clue writing competition, a puzzle contributor to the community site mycrossword.co.uk (as Chopin) and was published by the Independent (as Bard) for the first time in March 2024.
Running approximately 14.00-17.00
In addition to writing crosswords, Peter is a father of four, a graphic designer working in science communication and often found playing guitar and harmonica in Norwich pubs.
