Wayne Matthews Biog:
Wayne Matthews – Bass Guitarist Coventry born Wayne Matthews is an electric and acoustic fretless bassist coming from both a Classical and Gospel music background. He studied at The Leeds College of Music, taking a Classical Degree primarily on the Viola with jazz elements whilst also playing Electric and Double Bass in various College ensembles and bands. Predominantly self-taught, Wayne has had lessons from Steve Thomas Cook, Robin Mullarkey, Gary Willis, Jeff Berlin, Mike Walker and has been mentored by Laurence Cottle. His musical influences are far reaching from Bach and Hindemith to Folk, Gospel, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Reggae and World Music styles. He has performed in a variety of styles and genres in the UK and Internationally including the West End - The Tina Tuner Show, currently depping on the Tina Turner 2025/2026 UK Tour, a 2024/2025 UK Tour of Hairspay, Jack and The Beanstalk (Hammersmith Lyric) 2022/23, Once on This Island (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre) 2023, TV, Radio, Gospel, Orchestral - (Limelight Orchestra), Big Bands - Badger Big Band, Crash Collective, Fat Chops, Jazz Colossus and Swingshift10, folk ensembles, singer-songwriter, jazz, soul and reggae. His CV includes the likes of Bob Mintzer, Jim Mullen, Toni Kofi, Alan Barnes, Dave O'Higgins, Simon Spillet, Benet McLean, Soweto Kinch, Ian Hill, Bryan Corbett, Damon Brown, Bruce Adams, Omar, Junior Giscombe, Lily Dior, Noel McCalla, Lurine Cato, Michelle John, Patrick Alan, Ray Butcher, Xhosa Cole, Art Themen, Alex Clarke, The British Collective, Romarna Campbell, Neon Villages (David A. Grey), Lee Mead, Latin Voices, The Brothers of Soul, Matt Telfer, Elle-J, Marcus Joseph, Wendy Kirkland, Roger Bougelais,
Mario Bakuna, LSK, Paul Menel (IQ & the Essentials), Silky Wilford and many more. Key support slots have been for Marcus Miller, The Selecter and Terri Lyne Carrington. Wayne has performed at many prestigious venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The 606, Pizza Express (Holborn, Soho, Chelsea and Birmingham), the Elgar Rooms at the Royal Albert Hall, The Nottingham Motor Point Arena, The Coventry Building Society Arena, The Jam House, Leicester City Football Stadium. Wayne’s quintet debuted in 2025 at the Black History Month Showcase at the 1000 Trades in Birmingham to great acclaim. The Garibaldi welcomes the second performance of this quintet featuring the vocal prowess of Lisa Miller who was a major force on the dance scene in the 90s. She mentors emerging artists in Leicester with the Project Live Scheme, now in it’s tenth year. Wolverhampton based drummer Parijat Miloo studied in London at one the prestigious Pop Academies and has been an active participant on the professional music scene across the UK displaying incredible versatility with a great pocket and jazz sensibilities. Pianist Ashley Allen is an artist in his own right, with his own EP and album out on release. His playing encapsulates elements of fusion, gospel, jazz, hip-hop and soul. Saxophonist Nick Cornwall is an experienced performer, having playing all over the UK predominantly in jazz and soul settings.
