About the event

International Observe the Moon Night @ CSN Planetarium
Every year astronomy groups all over the world come together to host International Observe the Moon Night outings on the same day to share the wonders of the night sky with people everywhere.

Join us at The Dale Etheridge Planetarium at the College of Southern Nevada's North Las Vegas Campus to celebrate International Observe the Moon Night 2024 with this FREE educational event for the community.

There will be a FREE live presentation inside and FREE stargazing in the parking lot with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society from 7 PM to 10 PM (and solar observing before sunset). In addition to the Moon, you'll also be able to view Saturn, and the tiny blue disc of Neptune through our telescopes, plus other wonders of the night sky.

At 4 PM, Sierra Ramsey, Planetary Science PhD candidate with the UNLV Dept. of Geoscience, will give a special live presentation about meteorites in the Planetarium dome entitled "Extraterrestrial Postcards and How to Read Them". She will also bring meteorites you can touch after the presentation. Free registration required (see below)!

Presentation Summary:

Sometimes, pieces of planetary bodies get sent to Earth as extraterrestrial postcards, known as meteorites. Some come from asteroids, while others come from the Moon and Mars. But all of them carry secrets about the formation of the planets, the history of Mars and the Moon, and the evolution of our Solar System.

The Dale Etheridge Planetarium will have FREE Moon-themed shows at 5 PM, 6 PM, and 7 PM. At 8 PM they will show Pink Floyd's The Dark Side of the Moon - 50th Anniversary Planetarium Show ($20/ticket).
