French macarons are meringue-based sandwich cookies made with almond flour, egg whites, and sugar, often filled with buttercream, ganache, curds, or jams. They are known for their smooth tops, ruffled edges (a "foot"), and flat bottoms. Originating in Italy, they were introduced to France in the 16th century. Popular flavors include vanilla, chocolate, raspberry, and pistachio.
