About this Event

RNA-seq analysis: from reads to differentially expressed genes.

Lead trainer:

Tristan Reynolds (Melbourne Bioinformatics, The University of Melbourne)

Workshop Description:

Across 2 days :

  • Wednesday 30th April-10:00am - 2:00pm
  • Thursday 1 May- 10:00am-2:00pm

Attendees can expect to gain an understanding of approaches to and practical experience in: quality control of short reads, alignment, gene counts, data normalisation, differential expression and visualisation. Places are limited to encourage discussion and experienced RNA-seq and Galaxy trainers will be present to answer your questions.

This training workshop will be conducted using Galaxy and the workshop materials are based on the following Galaxy training workshops:

  • RNA-seq reads to counts
  • RNA-seq counts to genes

It is important that you are familiar with navigating the Galaxy platform as the workshop will not include introductory content on how to use the platform.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Perform quality control of short read data
  • Align reads to a reference genome and generate gene counts
  • Convert gene counts to differentially expressed genes and normalise data
  • Visualise differential gene expression

Target audience:

Researchers who have, or will soon acquire, RNA-seq short read data that they need to analyse themselves. No programming experience is required.

Eligibility:

This free workshop is available to staff and students at The University of Melbourne and its affiliated institutes.

When registering for this event you must provide an email address for an affiliated institution, or your registration may be cancelled.

Prerequisites and Requirements:

No programming experience is necessary, but familiarity with navigating the Galaxy platform is required as this workshop will not include introductory content on how to use the Galaxy platform. Attendance at a previous Galaxy workshop or working through this material is sufficient for attendance.

This is an in person hands-on workshop and attendees must bring their own computers (laptop chargers also recommended) with access to the Uniwireless or Eduroam internet/wifi. The following is also required:

- Web browser (Firefox or Chrome recommended)

- Participants should register for a Galaxy Australia account using their institutional email address at least 2 weeks prior to the workshop.
