About the Instructor:
Doug is a fiber artist who specializes in weaving beautiful seats and backs in chairs, rockers, and stools using cane, flat reed, rush, and other fiber materials. In addition, he enjoys stained glass art, textile weaving, and woodworking. Doug’s seat weaving projects have been exhibited in Tennessee, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Ohio. He enjoys the beauty of seats woven in classic Appalachian patterns, such as Daisies and Buttons, Daisy Chain, Double Victoria, Spider Weave, Star of David, Honeycomb, and Lace. He received Best of Show recognition at the Summer Craft 2017 Exhibition in Tennessee. Doug offers classes in seat weaving for those interested in learning this time-honored craft. He has taught locally at the Exchange Place (Kingsport, TN), Washington College Academy School of Arts and Crafts (Limestone, TN), and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (Gatlinburg, TN). Through these classes, he has experienced the joy of watching new students struggle and succeed at crafting a beautifully handwoven seat. Doug lives with his wife, Deborah, on their farm in Telford, TN. In addition to seat weaving, they also create exquisite weaving tools, including boat shuttles, out of native and exotic hardwoods. Doug is a member of The SeatWeavers’ Guild (currently its President), Tennessee Craft-Northeast Chapter, Overmountain Weavers Guild, and Handweavers Guild of America.
