Heartland’s New Play Reading: THE SPINDLE OF NECESSITY by Guest Playwright Carson Grace Becker – December 6 & 7
Heartland’s Annual New Play Reading, “The Play’s the Thing,” features a full-length play that has not been published or produced before. This December 6 (7:30 pm) & 7 (2:00 pm) the play THE SPINDLE OF NECESSITY by guest playwright Carson Becker, will enjoy a workshopped play reading at Heartland.
Carson Grace Becker is an award-winning playwright/screenwriter, the former Artistic Director of Chicago Dramatist, and founder of The Root & The Bloom, a Humanities non-profit in Butte, MT . She has been an Arts & Culture worker across the Midwest, as well as CA, HI, and MT. She has received commissions/productions from The Goodman, Nebraska Repertory, Honolulu Theater for Youth, The Angel Theater Company, Riverside Theater, The Greenheart Center, and has been produced throughout the country. She’s the recipient of a Joseph Jefferson Award, The Ofner Prize, two Illinois Arts Council artistic merit grants, with additional script placement awards at the LA New Wave and Austin Film Festivals.
The purpose of this program is to improve a play before it’s fully staged, with the help of the audience and three credentialed responders who help us understand the important components of a good play. The playwright is involved in rehearsals and both performances, and to hear the respondents following the Sunday matinee. An optional survey will be taken from the audience.
On Sunday, December 7, after the 2:00 pm matinee, critical responders have been invited to comment on the play with the intention of helping the playwright further develop the play.
This new-play project, in its eighth year, was founded by Dr. John Ficca, Emeritus Chair of the Department of Theatre at Illinois Wesleyan, who passed away November 20, 2024.
The play is directed by Artistic Director RHYS LOVELL and features Heartland actors Cyndee Brown, Jeff Ready, Mia Katz, Kelly Ferguson and Wren Huebner in the play reading.
About the play, THE SPINDLE OF NECESSITY:
Three classical monologues. Three unique acting students. One unrelenting theater maven. In a NYC drama class, artistic themes and personal destinies collide as the work of honing an honest performance is perfected. Private secrets conjure ancient fates as characters bravely confront life's imitation of art. A comic-drama about mentorship, money and medical marijuana -- a love song to classical theater told with Brechtian device.
A $10 Donation is requested for admittance. Reservations are recommended by booking a ticket online at www.heartlandtheatre.org or writing
