Skate Park Saturdays at Fairview Skate Park in Normal is the newest initiative of the BN Hub of Illinois Humanities Envisioning Justice in collaboration with Crib to Crib Skateboarding Co. in Downtown Bloomington. Skate Park Saturdays honors the BN Hub's commitment to “Wellness is Crime Prevention,” in the words of Illinois artivist King Moosa, and reimagines our collective relationship to practices and communities that have been historically misrepresented as countercultural and criminal.
Skate Park Saturdays will take place from 10:00am-1:00pm on the first and third Saturdays of each month from March - June (based on current grant funding and weather permitting). Each Skate Park Saturday will be unique in its energy while featuring a few key components (namely 1 community partner, 1 art partner, free food, and physical activity/fresh air). Skate Park Saturdays is FREE to attend for all ages.
Partners throughout the series include, but are not limited to: ISU Center for Inclusive Generational Environments, CHEAC (Creative Healing Expressive Art Center), YWCA McLean County, Latinos en BloNo, McLean County Reentry Council, Illinois Art Station, BCAI Cultural Arts & Humanities, ISU Wonsook Kim School of Art, Strong Towns Blono, Jonathan Stein (Art Educator), Normal Public Library, Bloomington Public Library, No Board Left Behind (Champaign-Urbana), Art from the Heart (Decatur), King Moosa (Rockford), Center for Youth & Family Solutions, Art by KRSB (Karen Brinker).
Since 2017, Illinois Humanities Envisioning Justice has leveraged arts and humanities programming to “examine mass incarceration and collectively shape a more just future.” Since 2024, Bloomington-Normal has functioned as one of six regional, grant-funded Hubs of IH Envisioning Justice. Fellow Hubs include: Carbondale, East St. Louis, Galesburg, Decatur, and Champaign-Urbana.
In addition to Skate Park Saturdays, previous efforts of the Bloomington-Normal Hub include the organization of a communities-wide Wellness Weekend in February 2025, support and co-facilitation of the November 2024 Envisioning Justice Statewide Convening at Bloomington Public Library, and the co-hosting of multiple Activation events with community partners and Hub members.
