The Story of the Genoa U.S. Indian School

From 1884 to 1934, the Genoa U.S. Indian Industrial School operated as one of the largest federal off-reservation boarding schools in the country. Located on former Pawnee Reservation land in Genoa, Nebraska, the school was part of a national system designed to assimilate Native American children into Euro-American culture. At its height, Genoa enrolled nearly 600 students from more than ten states and over 40 tribal nations. This program explores the history and legacy of the Genoa Indian School: its mission, the experiences of the students who lived there, and the continuing efforts to preserve and share their stories.
