The Pringle Proms is thrilled to announce its September guest: celebrated South African artist Beezy Bailey, who will join Brian Berkman for an exclusive live conversation on Saturday, September 20 from 12 noon to 3:30 PM at 1332 Edward Road, Pringle Bay.
This unique event includes a varied buffet lunch with wine and beverages, served before the interview, giving guests the opportunity to relax and connect in the company of fellow art lovers before diving into Beezy’s imaginative world.
Known for his wildly inventive works that defy categorisation, Beezy Bailey has spent more than 30 years creating across painting, sculpture, printmaking, and performance. He has collaborated with international legends like David Bowie, Brian Eno, and Dave Matthews, and his art is represented in prestigious collections including those of the David Bowie Art Collection, the Getty Family, and South Africa’s National Gallery.
“Each of my works is a frozen dream,” Bailey says. “Images and legends enter from my subconscious… I am a conduit of visual messages greater than me.”
Bailey’s career is a kaleidoscope of creative energy—from transforming statues outside Parliament to co-producing sound-paintings for the Venice Biennale. His work is both joyful and provocative, described by Brian Eno as “African jazz in paint.”
At the Pringle Proms, Brian Berkman will explore Beezy’s career highlights, his unconventional creative process, his family and his deep concern for the planet and humanity, all while uncovering the layers of humour, imagination and spirit that define his work.
Being the grandson of Sir Abe Bailey – one of the original Randlords - he had to “paint his way out of that reputation” to be taken seriously as an artist. He says: “My father was Jim Bailey, of Drum magazine, with 23 offices across the post-colonial Africa with Drum Magazine giving Africans their own platform, spawning the careers of great writers and photographers. He was a visionary and an independent anarchist who went against the tide in pioneering a free press in this country. He gave me great insight into how the media and the world worked. He also wrote two books about the bronze age, which was his passion, and had a collection of African bronzes.”My grandmother, Mary, Lady Bailey, pioneered the SA to London air route by making the first flight by a woman solo from London and back in 1928, and my other grandfather, Dr Harry Epstein, was your original GP – gynae, surgeon, and shrink all rolled up in one. After he retired he set up a surgery in a garage and treated black people without charging them,” he says.
Beezy makes art out of joy and laughter—and sometimes terror,” says Brian Eno. “He cooks up new worlds... bursting with bright new music.”
Tickets are limited and priced at R450 per person, which includes an arrival drink, the buffet lunch, wine, and dessert. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to connect with one of South Africa’s most important and original artistic voices in an intimate, inspiring setting.
