About the event

Ironbeard Archery Challenge
Roland Ironbeard was a valued member of the SCA for the better part of 30 years and brought great joy to the archery communities in the Baronies of Stormhold and Krae Glas. Unfortunately, a few years ago Roland was struck down with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

In tribute to his legacy, the Barony of Krae Glas is proud to present the third Memorial Ironbeard Inter-Barony Archery Challenge!

Roland Ironbeard was well known for his enthusiasm for archery and his good sense of humour. This year’s third Archery Challenge will focus on accessibility and fun.

The event will be a potluck lunch followed by an Ironbeard-themed novelty shoot.

The champion will be determined by points on the day.

FAQ

WHAT SHOULD I BRING FOR THE POTLUCK?

A good rule of thumb is enough food for yourself and to share with 3-4 others.
Bring your own feasting gear (plate/bowl, cutlery, drinking vessel and towel) and serving platter. If you need to borrow feasting gear please let the Steward know.

There are no cooking facilities onsite, so please bring foods that are suitable to be eaten cold.

Easy potluck food ideas include:
• Dried & Fresh Fruits
• Nuts
• Cheese
• Bread
• Cured Meats & Pickles
• Hard boiled eggs
• Roast or Rotisserie Chicken
• Salads
• Dips

If you have specific dietary requirements, please make sure you bring things you can eat!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

This is a garbed event. If you require assistance with garb on the day please let the Steward know.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Please bring your bows and blunt combat arrows if you have them! A reminder that the SCA is focused on pre-16th century reenactment, so please leave your compound and modern style bows at home. Longbows, horse bows and recurve bows without scopes etc. are all excellent choices.

Loaner gear, including bows and arrows will be available on the day.

If you are an armoured combatant and wish to participate in the Agincourt run, please bring your armour.

Please bring a picnic rug or chair, something to share for the potluck lunch and feasting gear.

The weather at this time of year can be unpredictable, so a sunhat and sunscreen and/or a cloak or warm covering are a good idea.

WHAT IF I'VE NEVER DONE ARCHERY BEFORE?

All levels of skill welcome! This year’s Ironbeard is all about encouraging participation across both baronies. We will provide and teach you everything you need to know to participate on the day.

Spectators are also welcome – bring your A&S projects and enthusiasm!

IS THIS A SHARPS OR BLUNTS EVENT?

Roland was renowned as a combat archer and this event will include an Agincourt run (shooting at people in armour from the line). For safety we will be using only BLUNT arrows for all aspects of this event.

Please leave your target (sharp) arrows at home. We will have plenty of loaner arrows and suitable arrows available on the day.

HOW CAN I HELP ON THE DAY (*hint hint*)?
We will be looking for people to help on the day with set up/pack down, running target archery lines, list keeping and other tasks. Please contact the Steward if you’d like to help out!

HOW DO I GET TO THE SITE?
Noble Park Secondary College is located a short walk from Noble Park station and has plenty of parking available close to the oval where the event is held.

ACCESSIBILITY AND SITE DESCRIPTION
The event will be held entirely outdoors on a grass oval. There will be pavilions and tables set up for court and the potluck. There is no pre-existing seating on site, so the populace are encouraged to bring chairs and rugs to sit on or otherwise make themselves comfortable.

There are taps and three toilets available a short walk from the oval including one unisex toilet which is also accessible. There will also be water/cordial containers available at the potluck tables.

There are paved flat pathways around the carpark and from the carpark to the toilets, however the walk to the gate and from the gate to the oval where the event is being held is on grass.

The walk to the oval from the carpark is uneven due to the grass and there is a small slope on one side of the oval leading down from the carpark. If it has been raining the days prior the oval ground can be soft.

The oval gate is narrow and has a dip.

The edges of the oval are lightly covered in trees but shade availability on the day is likely to be low.

The archery activities will be undertaken at various points around the oval, which will require participants to traverse short distances between activities. It is also typical for participants to assist with retrieving arrows after an activity has concluded.
Loaner bows will range from 20 to 30 pounds draw weight and require upper body/back strength to effectively participate. New archers can also sometimes experience “bow slap” on their inner forearms – please let the target archery marshals know if you are new so we can provide you with appropriate equipment.
The event is likely to be photographed and images/video posted to social media. Please contact the Steward if you have concerns or requirements relating to this.

The Krae Glas hall (Dolphin’s Keep, 24 Mons Parade) is a 5 minute walk or drive away and will be accessible for set up/pack down. Please contact the Steward if you are likely to need to access the hall for storage or a quiet space during the event.
