About the event

Commander's Picnic and 25th Anniversary Celebration
On Monday, September 15, members of America’s Boating Club of the Crystal Coast will celebrate the institution's 25th anniversary. Festivities kick off with a meet-and-greet, followed by a boating distress signal demonstration at 3, a BBQ buffet from Fat Fellas at 4, and the anniversary cake cutting at 5. Registration is required by noon on September 10 to ensure an accurate headcount.

America's Boating Club of the Crystal Coast will celebrate its twenty fifth service anniversary on September 15, 2025. The boating club assists community members and visitors to access, enjoy and benefit from living and sharing the boating lifestyle by acquiring and improving seamanship skills, performing community service and engaging socially with boaters of all sizes and types of watercraft.

The club offers excellent boating safety courses ranging from basic boat handling, through coastal electronic navigation and offshore cruise planning. ABC of the Crystal Coast supports and participates in many civic activities such as Vessel Safety Checks, Military Appreciation Day, Boy Scout Boating Merit Badge counseling, NCMM Junior Sailing Program, National Park Service storm debris removal and environmental beach cleanups.

On June 10, 2000 Carteret County boaters received the club charter with fifty initial members. Today, with 88 active members, operating as America's Boating Club of the Crystal Coast, it is the local affiliate of the America's Boating Club whose heritage extends from the United States Power Squadrons, founded in 1914. Most notably the US Power Squadrons trained thousands of sailors and soldiers to become navigators during World War II. Today, there are twelve affiliate clubs in North Carolina with the Crystal Coast club being among the largest and most active. They are one of 268 affiliate clubs nationally with nearly 15,000 members across the United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The club welcomes local residents of the Crystal Coast, newcomers, seasonal visitors, and all boating enthusiasts regardless of experience. We offer instruction to first-timers and have coach/instructor opportunities for old salts.

The club brings to its members the fun of boating, new skills development, increased safety on the water and opportunities to enjoy and experience the beautiful Crystal Coast waters. The club shares picnics on a sandbar, quiet walks through the Shackleford Banks meadows, spotting a wild pony harem, watching a sea turtle gulp a breath and delighting in dolphins gliding alongside a boat's bow. Enjoying, experiencing, learning, sharing - That's Club life, that's what the Club facilitates and promotes.

Club members volunteer to help others build and practice seamanship skills in the classroom and on the water. Certified club member instructors teach community boaters through a combination of basic boating courses, advanced navigation and open water boat handling. They offer short seminars on local waters, mobile device marine apps, marine radio use and many others.

The springtime boating course offerings are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and accepted by the NC Wildlife Resources Commission which allows the boating club to issue a boating safety certification card showing that the student has met the North Carolina requirements for boating safety education. The club's Marine Navigation courses prepare boaters for the USCG OUPV 'six-pack' operator license.

Select members of the ABC of the Crystal Coast are certified to perform complimentary vessel safety checks for recreational boaters. This program is administered by the USCG and its Auxiliary. Boating club members study and pass the rigorous safety inspector exam and are mentored by experienced members. Community boaters benefit from free yearly safety checks by ensuring that the USCG and NC required safety equipment is onboard and functioning.

America's Boating Club of the Crystal Coast has served the Carteret County boating community interests and needs for twenty five years, on and off the water. Whether you enjoy powerboats, sailboats, kayaks or paddleboards you are welcome to come and meet us anytime, joining is easy. We hold casual dinner meetings on the third Monday of each month. We hold breakfast chats and storytelling on the fourth Thursday of each month. We boat all year, with specific summertime day trips and week-long trips around the NC coast.
