When I am asked what the most contentious topic is in Newmarket’s history, I answer that, in my opinion, the whole matter of the “Ghost Canal” would have to be my choice. Few topics in our history have garnered more missed facts or generated more myths and misinterpretations than Newmarket’s Canal project.
In this series of walks / presentations, I will attempt to highlight the facts, debunk the myths, and present the current thinking on the matter. It means dealing with a multitude of facts, and it may seem a bit boring, but to properly assess history, one must go back to the base facts and re-evaluate, when necessary, the conclusions that were made.
I intend to offer a heritage walk on four separate dates for the convenience of those of who are interested. The first date is already full! The two evening walks will feature a much shorter distance covered, travelling along the former Canal to the area just west of Richardson Park, a walk of about 20 minutes each way and an ongoing presentation along the way.
There will be two longer walks in September and I will post the dates later this week!
Each of the walks will begin in the Tannery parking lot east side.
Each walk will feature a different charity as its benefactor and the cost to participate will be $20. As usual, I will put together a small info. packet for participants. Payment will be made the night of the walk!
If you are interested in participating in the 26th of August walk, please send me an email to
dGhlaGlzdG9yeWhvdW5kIHwgcm9nZXJzICEgY29t indicating the number in your party. I will try to limit the number of participants to twenty to twenty-five for convenience’s sake. You can also PM me but please do not just comment on the Facebook post as I may miss your intensions!
I look forward to getting back out there and this is a topic which I think everyone will find interesting plus we will be raising funds for four local charities.
Hope to see many of you there!
