About the event

Gleny Rae Thankful launch with Anousha Victoire and Emily Smith
Former Newcastle musician Gleny Rae Virus has been living and working in Mparntwe/Alice Springs for the past five years, and has spent this time being inspired by the desert culture and landscape. Alongside her job teaching music in Alice Springs and surrounding communities, Gleny has recorded a new album – Momentum - which will be her first release on vinyl.
Gleny returns to Newcastle to celebrate this album and release the single Thankful, with some help from some very talented Novocastrian ladies Emily Smith and Anousha Victoire. Thankful is a calypso inspired song about small mercies and challenging times.
“I wrote the song after my Troopy and violin were stolen from outside a restaurant in Alice Springs. 24 hours later, they were retrieved and returned to me by an absolute legend of a local fella who happened to be in the right place at the right time. That truly is something to be thankful for.” – Gleny Rae
Gleny Rae Virus is a country girl with an international heart; a musician and educator who believes in the power of music to connect, heal and embrace the human spirit. She has released albums with several bands including Toe Sucking Cowgirls, The Junes, Rob Luckey and the Lucky Bastards, in addition to her own releases including the Nimbin Roots Music Best Album 2018 Diggin a Hole. In 2023, Gleny was awarded a Golden Fiddle at Tamworth Country Music Festival, plus Instrumentalist of the Year at the Australian Folk Music Awards.
Anousha Victoire is a weaver of everyday dreams, stitching folk/world influenced melodies with bell - over - water clarity of vocal tone. The introspective singer - songwriter blends delicate ideas with a heart - aching immediacy. Her trademark fingerpicking folk guitar and haunting vocal melodies are complemented by soaring, emotive strings and vocal harmonies, blending into folk storytelling future timeless classics. After her first ABC Music Award (Folk) for one of the very first songs she wrote, she went on to build a loyal following with multiple songs gaining indie and ABC radio airplay. Anousha’s live performance combines the soaring vocal range of Kate Bush, the melodic pop folk feels of Beth Orton, the fearless feminist fire of Ani Difranco, and the haunting roots melodies of Gillian Welch.
Emily A Smith, the girl from Gawler SA - now calls Newcastle her home, where she is in demand as session guitarist and singer songwriter. She has worked extensively in the Australian Country music scene touring with artists such as Beccy Cole, Catherine Britt and recorded with Bill Chambers. Host of the Stag and Hunters 90’s grunge night Temple of Stag, you can find her every second Monday night fronting the Stag Temple Pilots. For one night only she tells you tales from the South, strumming her guitar and bearing her heart and soul in the form of her song.
This dynamic trio of chanteuses will be joined the inimitable “banjo princess” Jenny Shimmin and “lucky bastard” Smithy on double bass for a night of joyful celebration, story telling and emotional elasticity.
