The Late Idyll concert program presents a concert of breathtaking contrasts, from Nordic intensity to sunlit lyricism. Audiences will experience two towering works of both fiery brilliance and radiant warmth. While Sibelius and Brahms are both masters of form and craft, the concerto and symphony appear very personal.
To quote Maestro Russell Ger, “These works feel like the composers are having a private conversation with you. They each have a kind of grand intimacy about them; seeming to both whisper as well as sing.”
Sibelius’ Violin Concerto is a haunting, electrifying masterpiece written by a composer who once dreamed of being a violinist himself. From its icy opening to its fiery, dance-like finale, the concerto is a showcase of passion and virtuosity. Rising star Christina Bouey brings it vividly to life.
Brahms’ Symphony No. 2 is often called Brahms’s “pastoral symphony.” This radiant work balances warmth, lyrical beauty, and bursts of joyful energy. From serene horn calls to its triumphant finale, the Symphony No. 2 remains one of the most beloved in the repertoire.
