Newaygo County's Least Wanted

Debate over a potential ban on invasive ornamental plants has caught people's attention in Michigan in the early part of this year.
Invasive species pose a risk to our natural areas by outcompeting those that are native to the region. Once introduced, these trees, shrubs, and flowers have the ability to spread over large distances via bird or even human activity. Fortunately, individual early detection and control efforts can save countless hours of work needed to restore the property.

In partnership with the Newaygo County Environmental Coalition, the Kent Conservation District will share a list of priority invasive plants in West Michigan, the established best management practices for eradicating them and provide next steps to restore the property by installing native species which benefit our local wildlife and pollinators substantially more than their invasive counterparts.

The presentation will also include landowner grant opportunities for habitat restoration, services that the in-house Kent Strike Team can provide including previous invasive control work with Newaygo County and upcoming volunteer events to get involved with local conservation efforts. The goal of the presentation is to share actionable steps toward mitigating the impact of invasive plants and repairing our land to provide the greatest benefit to local wildlife.
