Governments are under increasing pressure to respond to today’s noncommunicable disease crisis by securing sustainable health financing and addressing the drivers of NCDs.
Health taxes—targeted excise taxes on tobacco, alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages—represent a cost-effective yet underutilized tool available to policymakers. Health taxes offer a triple-win solution: Saving lives and preventing disease by reducing the consumption of harmful products that lead to NCDs; generating domestic revenue that can reduce reliance on declining donor aid; and reducing long-term health system costs. Fiscal policies work—and the proof spans the globe from Mexico to The Philippines.
On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly and High-Level Meeting on NCDs, join Vital Strategies to hear from leading experts on how governments can enact or adjust their health taxes to meet public health goals and overcome industry opposition to health taxes. This is the moment for bold leadership to reduce NCDs and governments have a powerful opportunity to fix the price tag on health and commit to policies that save lives and build healthier economies.
Vital Strategies will promote the new Health Tax Action Guide at the event, a playbook for governments to implement effective health taxes.
Join us on Tuesday, Sept. 23. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. Event starts at 4:00 p.m.
Speakers: TBD
