MOCACREATE: Qixi for You & Me with Teaching Artist Yu Rong

Inspired by the tale of Niulang the Cowherd and Zhinü the Weaver Girl, Qixi celebrates love that spans time and space. On this night, Niulang and Zhinü —represented by the stars Altair and Vega— are able to reunite for just one night! You can even spot them in the “Complete Map of the Unified Star Configurations in the Heavens,” a star chart on view in !

To mark their annual reunion, join teaching artist Yu Rong in making fizzy paintings that bubble and burst like a star-filled sky. First, use crayons to draw your own constellations or heartfelt messages. Then, sprinkle on some baking soda, add food coloring and vinegar, and watch your galaxy come to life!

Paint, build, craft, and collage with us! Inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and local artists, MOCACREATE explores different themes every month. MOCACREATE workshops are designed with families in mind, but all are welcome!

Yu Rong is a painter and product designer. She was born in Sichuan and currently lives in New York City, where she is a teaching artist at the Hope Garden Center and at MOCA. She received her BFA in Product Design and MFA in Painting at Parsons School of Design and NYSS, but has been practicing art ever since she was a child.
