About Los Rebeldes:
Los Rebeldes (of Minnesota) is a celebrated family band that has brought the heart of Tex-Mex and Mexican folk music to audiences across the Midwest for over four decades. Formed in the early 1980s, Los Rebeldes began with the musical passion of the Cardona family. Raul Sr., alongside his sons Raul Jr., Rene, and Luis, started performing together in the 1970s, crafting a sound rooted in traditional Mexican folk styles. Around 1983, the band officially took shape when Raul Sr.’s brother-in-law, Jesús “Chuy” Velez, joined as a lead member, with close friend José Madrigal on guitar rounding out the ensemble. Chuy retired in 1990, and Raul Sr. continued to play accordion well into his 70s. The band remains a testament to their musical legacy.
Los Rebeldes seamlessly blends traditional Mexican folk with contemporary “Tex-Mex” sounds, incorporating elements of rock, country, folk, and blues. This fusion creates a unique sound where the accordion, trumpet, and guitar take center stage, honoring their roots while resonating with modern audiences. Throughout the years, various Cardona family members have contributed their talents on instruments like the trumpet, accordion, and guitar, making Los Rebeldes a dynamic, multigenerational force in music.
Today, Los Rebeldes is dedicated to keeping the Tex-Mex and Conjunto music traditions alive in the upper Midwest, connecting diverse communities to the vibrant heritage of south-of-the-bord.
