We are honored to be asked to cosponsor the Four Chaplains Ceremony at Cranston Church in New Richmond with the American Legion Clermont County Council.
Please join us Sunday February 1st at 2pm for the story of four chaplains of different faiths who came together to save other servicemen onboard the USS Dorchester during WW2.
Please join us after at the VFW for light refreshments.
The Four Chaplains, who sacrificed their lives to save others when the USAT Dorchester sank during World War II.
The four men were Lt. George L. Fox (Methodist), Lt. Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Lt. Clark V. Poling (Dutch Reformed), and Lt. John P. Washington (Roman Catholic).
On February 3, 1943, the troop ship Dorchester was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Newfoundland.
The chaplains helped calm the frightened soldiers, aided the wounded, and guided others to safety as the ship sank.
When the supply of life jackets ran out, the chaplains gave their own to four young men, linking arms and praying as the ship went down.
