About the event

Josephine Baker: From Creole Goddess to Siren of the Resistance
Twilight falls upon the streets of Paris. Along the façade of the hallowed shrine to France’s most honored dead, images of a bygone era dance—images of the Creole Goddess who took Jazz Age Paris by storm. Filled only with three cups of soil—from Missouri, France, and a small cemetery in Monaco— a flag-draped coffin is borne along four blocks of red-carpeted, cobblestoned streets to the massive doors of the Panthéon amid strains of “J’ai Deux Amours.”

In Josephine Baker: From Creole Goddess to Siren of the Resistance, New Orleans singer and entertainer Anaïs St. John brings to life Josephine Baker’s extraordinary journey through song and spoken word. From humble beginnings in East St. Louis, Baker would become one of the most celebrated performers in Paris in the Roaring Twenties, a spy for the French Resistance during World War II, and a devoted advocate for civil rights in her homeland.

Josephine Baker: From Creole Goddess to Siren of the Resistance, created for and starring Anaïs St. John, was written by Denise Altobello with musical direction by Harry Mayronne.
