Join us on Saturday, Sept 6, at 10 am at Baldwin & Co. for a FREE writing workshop led by Allison Alsup and Jessica Kinnison of the New Orleans Writers Workshop!
“Setting as Character: Leveraging Place in Your Writing”
Setting involves more than just describing a given location and time. Nor is it just about adding local flavor, atmosphere or a beautiful backdrop. Rather, in the hands of a savvy writer, settings take on a life of their own as a dynamic building block, one that not only immerses readers but that also drives events and characters in an unfolding story.
In this generative workshop, suitable for aspiring and experienced writers alike, we’ll explore the craft of setting, finding fresh takes on this narrative essential. The second half of our session will be devoted to a custom writing exercise designed to put these principles into action on the page. Participants can expect to leave with a scene or stanzas built from the ground-up, looking closely at the sensory impressions, rhythms, and specific, shifting details of the worlds their characters inhabit. Both poets and prose writers can benefit; writers of all levels welcome.
