Join us as we delve into the vibrant world of New York City’s ballroom scene — a culture of resilience, creativity, and unapologetic self-expression. The evening will feature an interactive book discussion, a screening of Paris Is Burning, and a dynamic conversation with Tatum exploring ballroom’s past, present, and future.
And the Category Is by Ricky Tucker (2022 Lambda Literary Award finalist) is a love letter to the Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ underground subculture, offering an inside look at ballroom’s history, houses, categories, and its influence on mainstream culture.
Paris Is Burning (1990) is the groundbreaking documentary by Jennie Livingston, capturing the artistry, struggles, and fierce competition of ballroom icons like Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Willi Ninja. Widely hailed as one of the most important LGBTQ+ films of all time, it remains a cornerstone in understanding the community’s impact.
Yohon Tatum, Legendary NYC Father Tisci and Community Engagement Coordinator at The LGBT Center, has been part of ballroom for 20 years. The evening continues with a dynamic conversation offering insights into ballroom history, its lasting cultural impact, and the ways it continues to inspire today.
Presented by the NHC Book Club & History Committee, Beyond the Ball is more than a discussion — it’s a celebration of community, identity, and the artistry that shaped a movement.
