In this multi-week workshop, participants will learn to forge their own custom chef’s knife and paring knife from high-carbon or stainless steel. Over the course of four sessions, you’ll explore the chemistry and craftsmanship behind blade creation—from raw steel to finished, functional kitchen tools. You’ll also gain hands-on experience using the tools of both the metal and wood shops to shape, assemble, and finish your knives for long-term performance.
This is a four-part class held weekly on Tuesdays beginning September 2.
What to Expect
Each week builds on the last as you work through the full knife-making process:
Week 1 – Profiling & Heat TreatmentShape your raw steel and heat treat it to alter the metal’s chemistry for hardness and durability. Learn about blade anatomy and knife styles.
Week 2 – Beveling & Rough ShapingBegin forming the cutting edge and refining the geometry of your blades using belt grinders and other metalworking tools.
Week 3 – Handle Shaping & AssemblyDesign and create custom handles using woodworking tools, then attach them to your blades for a complete, ergonomic fit.
Week 4 – Finishing & Edge WorkRefine your blades, sharpen them, and learn how to care for your finished knives to maintain sharpness and longevity.
This is a hands-on, skill-building workshop. Expect to work with kilns, grinders, sanders, and saws in a supportive and guided environment.
