Noah Webster, World-Famous Lexicographer, with Joshua Kendall

In anticipation of this year’s Dictionary Day event, author Joshua Kendall will discuss the origins of Webster's American Dictionary of the English Language (1828), which took over 30 years to complete.

While Webster today is best known as the father of American English, his work has also had a major impact on the history of British lexicography. Kendall will also explain how the 1864 version of Webster's dictionary—edited after his death by Yale’s 11th president, Noah Porter—served as the model for The Oxford English Dictionary.

Mondays at Beinecke online talks focus on materials from the collections and include an opening presentation at 4pm followed by conversation and Q & A beginning about 4:30pm until 5pm. Episodes are generally recorded and published on the library's YouTube channel within a few weeks of the original live program.
