Holding It Together: the Netsuke & Obi in Traditional Japanese Dress

Discover the art and symbolism of netsuke and obi in Japanese dress presented by The Maridon Museum.
Join us for a fascinating talk and demonstrations on the role of the netsuke and obi in traditional Japanese dress.

Netsuke are intricate miniature carvings that functioned as toggles to secure personal items to a kimono, while the obi is the decorative sash that cinches the kimono. Both evolved from simple functional objects into highly symbolic and artistic elements of Japanese culture, reflecting personal status, taste, and storytelling, particularly during the Edo period (1603–1868) illustrated in the exhibit.
