With just over a week until public submissions close on the proposed new site for the ARC (Archive, Research and Collections) Facility, we’re inviting Nelson and Tasman locals to join us at the museum to hear the latest updates and ask questions about this vital community project.
Why ARC Matters
For more than 20 years, it has been clear that our current Isel Park facility is no longer fit for purpose. It is too small for the growing collection, has leaks, contains asbestos, and cannot safely care for the region’s $20m nationally and internationally significant collection.
The ARC Project So Far
In 2019, the museum planned a new ARC Facility in Church Street, Nelson. However, with the closure of the Regional Heritage Fund in 2024, that project became financially unviable. After a full review of options, a purpose-built facility on a greenfield site in Richmond has emerged as the most financially sustainable choice:
• Reduces the budget by $6 million (down from $14.9m)
• Delivers a fit-for-purpose, future-proofed facility
• Safeguards the collection while exhibitions and education programmes continue at Trafalgar Street
Importantly, the project will not cost ratepayers any more. $3m was committed by both councils in 2018, and any shortfall will be met through fundraising and sponsorship.
This new facility is about safeguarding the collection for the future and strengthening exhibitions and school programmes.
