About the event

NAS History Talk: The Island Farm Hostel & the Great Escape of German POWs in 1945, with Mike Clubb

This is the extraordinary story of incompetence in war-time.

A hostel designed originally to accommodate female workers at the Bridgend weapons factory is converted, ineffectively, into a place to hold 1600 German Prisoners of War. 167 Germans escape into the Glamorgan countryside; by far the largest number of escapees from any British POW camp.

How did they escape? How far did they reach? Who captured them? What happened to the camp?
